Position paper arguing that unchecked AI tutor use leads to cognitive atrophy, loss of agency, emotional risks, and ethical concerns (privacy, academic integrity). Authors call for intentional, transparent, critically informed AI use that empowers rather than diminishes the learner. Workshop at AIED 2025. Drawing on cognitive science and pedagogy, warns that over-reliance on AI tutors without guardrails creates cognitive atrophy, disruption of meaningful learning, replacement of effort with cognitive shortcuts, loss of agency, dependency, conformity, eroded self-efficacy, emotional risks, negative impacts on well-being, academic integrity threats, and questionable privacy practices. Advocates for student perspective inclusion and actionable strategies to ensure AI acts as meaningful support, not a cognitive shortcut.
