Process Feedback

Process Feedback is a learning-first alternative to AI detection tools. It records the writing process — time spent, revisions, copy-paste events, and whether and when AI was used — and presents it as a writing process report, shifting the question from whether a student cheated to how the work was actually done.

What you can do with it

A teacher can view a report for one student or load hundreds at once from a teacher dashboard, and students can view their own reports and reflect on them. It works in Google Docs through a browser extension, in the project's own writing space, and in LMS editors such as Canvas, with LTI integration available; a report can also be downloaded as a PDF and uploaded to any platform. The project publishes reflection prompts for guiding student self-review, guidance on reading AI-use patterns, and teacher guides.

Who it is for

It is aimed at individual teachers and students, who can use it without institutional agreements, and at institutions that need a deployment with formal support. The project states that neither it nor the software takes a position on whether students should use AI; it reports what happened and leaves evaluation to the instructor. Developers can also use the project's browser-based code editor, which records process in programming assignments.

Notes and caveats

Free covers the individual classroom workflows; institutional pricing exists separately and is tied to deployment scope, data handling, support, and compliance rather than to a per-student or per-teacher charge. Because a report shows a process rather than an intent, copy-paste alone is not misconduct — the project's own guidance says a student may be pasting their own earlier text, and that students should not be penalized merely for pasting. The adoption figures and the 5.0 Chrome Web Store rating are the project's own marketing; reviews in an extension store are not independent evidence of learning outcomes. Read the reports as evidence for a conversation, which is how the tool is designed and how the developer describes it.
